When Diamond Posey began teaching as an aide in Casey Gossman’s first-grade classroom four years ago at Champaign’s South Side Elementary School, the Chicago native had no experience in education, even though she always knew she wanted to work in a classroom.

Posey took to the job right away, and four classes of students took to her.

”She is kind, compassionate and loving towards all kids, and the kids love her right back,” Gossman said. “She helps our students to grow, build confidence, try new things, and she helps them to have memorable learning experiences. We are so lucky to have her at South Side.”

I find my work important because … education has the power to change lives and open doors. Knowing that my effort helps students move toward a brighter future gives purpose to what I do.

I went into education because … every student deserves someone who believes in them and supports their growth. I love the looks on the kids’ faces when it clicks, when they finally get the answer to their problem on their own.

My most fulfilling moments on the job are when … students overcome what they once thought they would never get over, and they begin to believe in their own abilities. Those moments remind me why education matters.

I keep students engaged by … building strong and trusting relationships and creating lessons that are relevant and interactive. When students feel connected and supported, they are always willing to learn and participate.

Something else I’m passionate about is … artistic self-expression through makeup, which I enjoy as a creative outlet. I also enjoy drawing during my free time as a way to relax and feel peace in my life.

If I weren’t working in education, I would be … My other passion is makeup, I enjoy making people look and feel their best.
